The village was under the administration of Magistrate Carlos when it was assaulted by a large group of pirates responsible for numerous acts of violence and destruction, including taking women hostage and selling them as "brides"; torturing the magistrate; assaulting the villagers and setting the village itself ablaze.
Jack Sparrow arrived in village and attempted to learn the location of the village's treasure stores. He was pursued by Captain Hector Barbossa, who was then aboard the Wicked Wench.

Located in the village was the canteen "La Cantina". La Cantina quickly became a center of operations for the an auctioneer pirate and his assistant. They mounted numerous signs around the building reading "Take a Bride" or "Take a Wench for a Bride".
Across the waterfront from La Cantina was an establishment called "Mercado", presumably offering the Mexican cuisine of the same name. The fort of Isla Tesoro, which was located near the Magistrate's house, was assaulted by sea before being taken by the pirates who then occupied the armory.
