On April 2014, while interviewing for his latest film Transcendence, Johnny Depp spoke briefly regarding the fifth installment of the Pirates series. Among his comments, Depp implied that Pirates 5 may be the last.

The following is from a video interview with Depp, posted April 2, 2014...

We're getting somewhere very interesting in terms of a script. And I'm very lucky that Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney have invited me in to help collaborate with the writer to bring another Pirates film that's fresh, and very different. I think we owe it to all the people who went and saw the other ones, you know. To give them, maybe, what seems to probably be the last. But you never know.

On April 13, an interview revealed more from Depp, in which he has "high hopes" for Pirates 5...

As for "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales," Johnny confirmed that Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg, who were behind Norway's Oscar- and Golden Globe-nominated "Kon-Tiki," are still attached to direct.
"Everyone involved wants the script to be right and perfect," Johnny explained. "So we have gone on to do other things (in the meantime). We are still going to do the film together. I enjoy them immensely. They are super talented. They have a great sense of humor. I think they have a really fun approach to what we are going to do with the next 'Pirates.' Very happily and proudly, I have welcomed taking part in the story and working directly with the screenwriter (Jeff Nathanson)—he and I. It's working out really well that way."
He added, "So I have high hopes for that 'Pirates 5' because if that's really the last one, which it probably is, I feel that we owe it to the audience who went and saw the films so many times. We'll do it right and end it on a high note."

In other Pirates-related news, another article says that the fifth film is still being planned for filming at Puerto Rico, going in line with what Rønning and Sandberg confirmed in January...

Pirates of the Caribbean 5 is expected to begin shooting in Puerto Rico at the end of this year, for a 2016 release. Disney moved location shooting from Hawaii to take advantage of the generous tax credits offered by Puerto Rico.
