Turtleman was among the sailors who served among the crew the Flying Dutchman.
Biography[]
At some unknown point in his life, Turtleman became a crew member serving aboard the Flying Dutchman under Captain Davy Jones. Like all of his barnacled shipmates, he went through a transmutation, after which he resembled a sea turtle. A solid shell grew on his back, his right arm turned into a paddle and a second paddle grew out of his left side below the arm. On his turtlehead he wore a devil-horned tricorne similar to the one Davy Jones and some other crewmen had. His further fate is unknown.
Behind the scenes[]
- Created by the conceptual artist Aaron McBride for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, the character himself does not appear in any Pirates of the Caribbean films. McBride described him as "the perfect cross between Tippy the Turtle and the pirate from those old Art Instruction School ads."[3]
- Aaron McBride affectionately dubbed the character "Turtle Guy" in behind the scenes for Dead Man's Chest,[3] the character was given the name "Turtleman" in The Art of Pirates of the Caribbean[1] and "Turtle" in Disney Pirates: The Definitive Collector's Anthology.[2]
- Turtleman, along with the other unused Flying Dutchman crewmen, Abalone and Driftwood, appears as an enemy in the 2013 video game Disney Infinity.
