The Third Mate was a high position aboard a ship. Below the captain, first and second mate, the third mate retained some control over the sailors. Some of the main duties a Third Mate had was to navigate the ship and respond to any emergencies. Edward Tomlin was a notable third mate aboard the Fair Wind.
