Parley
From PotC Wiki
| This article is about the phrase. You may be looking for the musical cue "Parley". |
- "Damn to the depths whatever muttonhead thought up parley!"
"That would be the French." - ―Pintel and Jack Sparrow[src]
Parley was a right set down in the pirate code of the Brethren in the Pirata Codex that allowed a pirate or other individual (on rare occasions, of course. i.e. Elizabeth Swann) to be taken by a crew member to the captain of their ship to discuss a treaty, negotiation, etc. without being attacked by the enemy's crew. Parley's generally ended sucessfully, but often pirates would bend the rules of Parley to uphold their own ambitions.
[edit] Notable Parleys
- "Your return to shore was not part of our negotiations nor our agreement, so I must do nothing."
- ―Hector Barbossa to Elizabeth Swann after their parley[[Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl|[src]]]
- The parley between Elizabeth Swann and Hector Barbossa forced the pirates to leave Port Royal, but they took Elizabeth with them, along with her medallion, finally ready to appease the Aztec gods.
- There have been two parley's between Jack Sparrow and Barbossa. The first was when Jack told Barbossa about the existence of William Turner aboard the HMS Interceptor. The second was shortly before the Battle of the Isla de Muerta when Jack coerced Barbossa into fighting the Royal Navy before lifting the curse.
- A parley between Will and Barbossa ended with the capture of Will, and the marooning of Jack and Elizabeth on Rumrunner's Isle.
- Cotton's parrot said parley when Jack the Monkey pulled his gun on him when the Pearl returned from the locker and everyone had their guns out and on each other.
- An informal Parley between Barbossa and Sao Feng regarding a journey to Davy Jones' Locker wasn't officially a parley, but it was a meeting of captains to negotiate the continuation of the Rescue crew's journey for Jack Sparrow. The meeting ended sourly, with an ambush by the Company, but fortunately Sao Feng's navigational charts, a ship and additional crew was granted to Barbossa.
- The great parley on the Sandbar between the Brethren Court and Cutler Beckett's armada. In this Parley, The leaders of the Pirates and East India Trading Company met to discuss an ending to the War Against Piracy. During the parley, Jack Sparrow was traded with Will Turner in order to supplement his debt to Davy Jones. The direct result of this parley would be the Battle of Calypso's maelstrom, the defeat of Cutler Beckett and the victory of piracy.
[edit] Behind the scenes
- The term is spelled "parlay" in the Pirata Codex, apparently a mistake, though this may simply have been intended as a non-standardized, in-universe spelling.
