"Three have already been sunk, sir. They're being sunk by a Captain called Salamander..."
―Mullroy to Hector Barbossa[src]

Mullroy was a marine in the British Royal Navy, and was stationed at Port Royal in the Caribbean under Commodore James Norrington's command. He was often seen serving alongside his fellow marine, Murtogg. Although he served as a marine, Mullroy himself admitted he couldn't actually swim. He later became part of the East India Trading Company and ultimately became a pirate in Hector Barbossa's crew on the Black Pearl and later on the Queen Anne's Revenge.

During the time of Norrington's promotion ceremony held at Fort Charles, Mullroy and Murtogg were assigned the task of guarding the dock at which the HMS Interceptor was berthed. Although they carried out their duty loyally, they proved little match for the trickery of Captain Jack Sparrow, and ended up engaged in conversation with the pirate aboard the HMS Interceptor. Although dutiful, they both proved incapable of rescuing Elizabeth Swann when she fell from atop the fort's battlements (because neither of them could swim) and this forced Jack to dive into the ocean to save her. Mullroy subsequently tried to curry favor with the Commodore by handing him Sparrow's effects, when Norrington and his men attempted to arrest the pirate.[2]

Following the capture of Elizabeth by the crew of the Black Pearl, the Royal Navy set up a search, and Mullroy and Murtogg were stationed aboard the HMS Dauntless. They participated in the fight against Hector Barbossa's undead pirates aboard the vessel, sharing a brotherly handshake before charging into battle, and survived the conflict. They were part of the assembly that was to witness Jack Sparrow's execution and had apparently received a promotion as both he and Murtogg now sported white wigs, though Jack was spared the hangman's noose by the efforts of Will Turner.[2]

During the War of Jolly Roger, when the Black Pearl was captured by the Navy and moved to Black Pearl Island, both Mullroy and Murtogg were assigned to guard the ship. However, they were unsuccessful because the ship was stolen right under their nose by a group of pirates.[3] The pair were later assigned to guard Port Royal prison. While there, they were able to thwart an escape attempted by Ragetti and Pintel.[4]

Around the time the Flying Dutchman was commanded by Admiral James Norrington, Mullroy and Murtogg served the East India Trading Company. When they first saw the Dutchman's crewmen, both soldiers were frightened by their appearances. They were tasked with guarding the Dead Man's Chest, training cannons on it to prevent Davy Jones from regaining control of his ship. The chest was ultimately stolen by Jack Sparrow while Mullroy argued the representation of the "fish people" with Murtogg. The two then abandoned their post as without the Chest there was no more need to guard it and swung over to the Black Pearl together, crashing into the side of the ship and allowing the newly wedded Elizabeth Turner to use their rope to swing to the Dutchman.[5]

Afterwards, the two put on pirate attire and joined in celebrating the death of Lord Cutler Beckett. Though Ragetti and Pintel noticed them, the two didn't seem to care and didn't harm them. They remained aboard as crew members during and following Barbossa's second mutiny , though joined Pintel, Ragetti and Marty in confronting Barbossa over this course of action. Nevertheless, they appeared set to remain aboard.[5]

The Queen Anne's Revenge[]

It's unknown if Mullroy and Murtogg participated in the battle in which the infamous pirate Blackbeard captured the Black Pearl. However, one year after the Quest for the Fountain of Youth both of them were serving under Barbossa once again, this time on the Queen Anne's Revenge, which Barbossa took for his own after mortally wounding Blackbeard on Unnamed island. Mullroy and Murtogg faithfully served Barbossa, who eventually managed to assemble a whole pirate fleet and rule the seas of the New World. The former marines served aboard the Revenge, and on one occassion started a fire which almost destroyed the ship.[6]

Salazar's revenge[]
Two pirates

Mullroy and Murtogg tell Hector Barbossa about Armando Salazar's attacks on his fleet.

"Speak."
"It's your ships, sir. They're being attacked by an enemy that takes no riches."
"Kills without provocation."
"Me ships? Not possible."
"Three have already been sunk, sir. They've been sunk by a captain called Salamander."
"Samovar."
"Salazar!
"
―Barbossa, Mullroy, and Murtogg[src]

In 1751, the Revenge was docked when Mullroy and Murtogg received words of a mysterious adversary destroying the ships of Barbossa's fleet, an enemy that attacked without provocations and took no riches, leaving only one survivor behind to tell the tale of his deeds. The duo boarded the Revenge, where the crew was having a party on the main deck, celebrating their latest victories on the high seas. Mullroy and Murtogg entered the captain's cabin, interrupting a concert performed by a group of musicians, to which Barbossa responded by firing his blunderbuss, scaring the musicians into running away. The former marines then informed their captain about the attacks on his fleet, but Barbossa didn't trust them at first. When they mispronounced the attacker's name as Salamander and Samovar, Barbossa realised the greatest pirate hunter of all time, Capitán Armando Salazar, had returned.[6]

A deal with the dead[]
"Sir. We would never question your reason as a captain but..."
"But is there a reason... as captain, you've chosen to sail in this unreasonable direction?"
"Tell the men to prepare to be boarded, to stand their ground and show no fear.
"
―Mullroy, Murtogg, and Hector Barbossa[src]

A few days later, the Queen Anne's Revenge sailed on the open sea, searching for the Silent Mary, Capitán Salazar's ship. Mullroy and Murtogg were standing with Barbossa on the quarterdeck when the man in the crow's nest spotted the Spanish ghost ship on the horizon. As the Spanish vessel approached, the two pirates asked their captain why did he sail their ship toward the unbeatable enemy, but Barbossa simply ordered them to tell the crew to stand their ground.[6]

Ghost Mullroy Murtogg

One of Salazar's ghostly crewmembers threatens Mullroy.

As the Silent Mary came close to the Revenge, the ghost ship raised its bow and opened the hull like the jaws of some giant sea monster, preparing to devour the pirate vessel. However, Barbossa convinced the undead Spaniards to stop their attack by yelling that he knew about Salazar's search for Jack Sparrow. The Spanish ghosts boarded the Revenge, and one of them pushed Mullroy against the mainmast, putting a sword to his neck. Fortunately for the pirates, Barbossa managed to make a deal with Salazar - he would lead the Spanish to Sparrow and in exchange Salazar would spare Barbossa and his crew. After the ghosts killed a few pirates, the survivors were forced to board the Silent Mary.[6]

Prisoner of the dead[]
Murtogg Mullroy Mary

Murtogg and Mullroy aboard the Silent Mary.

"I think we should tell each other where our treasures are buried, just in case one of us survives."
"Oh, good idea."
"You go first."
"My treasure is buried between two crossed palm trees in an unmarked grave in Aruba. What about yours?"
"I haven't got any.
"
―Mullroy and Murtogg[src]

With Barbossa at the helm, the Silent Mary sailed the whole night in search for Jack Sparrow, until the ghost ship finally reached its destination at dawn. Sparrow's ship, the old sloop the Dying Gull, appeared on the horizon, close to the shores of Hangman's Bay. The Spanish ghosts and their pirate prisoners watched from afar as Sparrow was left in a small dinghy on the open sea, accompanied by a young man and a girl, while the sloop sailed away. With this new development, Salazar decided to send his secret weapon to deal with Sparrow. His men dropped three rotting shark corpses into the water, and Salazar used his powers to resurrect the sea beasts, ordering them to "kill the Sparrow". Mullroy and Murtogg watched from the qaurterdeck the undead sharks swimming away, commenting how that wasn't good. A few moments later, approximatelly forty ghosts jumped overboard, using their supernatural powers to run on water and personally reach Jack before he could reach dry land. However, Jack and his companions safely reached the island, where the ghosts could not follow them, forcing Salazar and his men to return to the Silent Mary.[6]

Mullroy Murtogg hang

Mullroy and Murtogg hang.

When Salazar reboarded the ship he had Barbossa and his entire crew hanged upside down on the main deck of the Silent Mary. He sentenced them all to death and started slowly butchering them with his rapier, one by one. Seeing what was going on, Mullroy proposed to Murtogg that they tell each other where they buried their treasures, in case one of them survives. Murtogg revealed his treasure was buried on the island of Aruba, but Mullroy had to admit he didn't have any treasure. Before Salazar could slaughter them all, Barbossa made another deal with the undead pirate hunter. Salazar would spare his life and the lives of his crew, and in exchange they would go to Hangman's Bay, capture Saprrow, and bring him back. Salazar reluctantly agreed.[6]

Hangman's Bay[]
Jack Mullroy Barbossa Murtogg

Mullroy and Murtogg learn about Barbossa's intention to betray Salazar.

"Captain, shouldn't we be getting back to Salazar, trade Mister Sparrow's life in for our own?"
"Aye, that we could. But I've come for the Trident of Poseidon."
"You're gonna double-cross the dead?
"
―Mullroy, Hector Barbossa, and Murtogg[src]

Free once again, Barbossa, Mullroy, Murtogg, and the rest of the survivors landed on Hangman's Bay. After some time, they found their target in a delicate situation - Jack Sparrow was being held prisoner by the local pirates, with their leader, Pierre Kelly, forcing Jack to marry his sister at gunpoint. Unnoticed, Barbossa and his men quitely surrounded the pirates and the wedding guests, with Barbossa firing his blunderbuss into the air, interrupting the ceremony right before Jack could kiss the bride. When Jack asked Barbossa for the wedding present, the pirate captain shot Kelly in the leg, forcing Kelly's gang to run away. Mullroy then asked Barbossa about taking Sparrow back to Salazar, but the captain revealed his true intention was to find the legendary Trident of Poseidon and use it to reclaim his rule of the sea.[6]

Barbossa then proceeded with the next part of his plan - he stabbed the bottle which contained the shrunken Black Pearl, lifting Blackbeard's magic which trapped the ship five years earlier. When Jack Sparrow dropped the bottle on the ground, it smashed to pieces, allowing the ship to start growing. However, the ship grew only to the size of a model and stopped. As Jack picked it up, Barbossa gave his crutch to Mullroy, and then took the ship, throwing it into the sea. The little ship sank, but a few moments later resurfaced, restored to its true size. Barbossa's men then took Jack and his two companions prisoners, boarding the Pearl and setting sail, with Mullroy taking the wheel.[6]

Race to the Black rock island[]

"Have you found what you're looking for yet, miss?"
"I'm trying!
"
―Mullroy and Carina Smyth[src]

As night fell, the Pearl sailed for the Trident. Mullroy steered the ship, while Barbossa stood nearby, trying to determine the proper course with the help of his nautical charts. Carina Smyth, who was tied up with Henry Turner behind the mizzenmast, tried to convince Barbossa that his map was incomplete and she could lead them to their goal in they trusted her, but Mullroy stated that there was no island on any map to support what Carina claimed. However, a few minutes later Barbossa noticed stormy seas behind them, and a lightning illuminated the Silent Mary. Realising the ghost ship was closing in on them, Barbossa ordered his men to free Carina, and Mullroy reluctantly gave her the wheel.[6]

Barbossa's sacrifice[]

With the curses of the sea undone by the destruction of Trident of Poseidon, the sea walls of the ocean started closing in on the tomb threatening to drown all left inside. Barbossa had the crew lower the anchor to save everyone and made the decision to sacrifice himself to save his daughter. Upon learning of their captain's demise, Mullroy along with Murtogg held their hats down in respect.[6]

Serving Jack Sparrow[]

With Barbossa now gone, Mullroy and Murtogg found themselves serving on the Black Pearl once more, this time serving Jack Sparrow. The two accepted Sparrow as their captain and would sail with him beyond his beloved horizon.[6] Mullroy's further fate is unknown.

Personality and traits[]

Mullroy

Mullroy

"You've seen a ship with black sails, that's crewed by the damned and captained by a man so evil that Hell itself spat him back out?"
"No."
"No."
"But I have seen a ship with black sails."
"Oh, and no ship that's not crewed by the damned and captained by a man so evil that Hell itself spat him back out could possibly have black sails, therefore couldn't possibly be any other ship than the
Black Pearl, is that what you're saying?"
"No.
"
―Mullroy and Murtogg[src]

Like Murtogg, Mallory was rather slow-witted but did seem to have a talent for survival. He was initially considered to be very skeptical of superstition, as he regarded his partner's insistence that the Black Pearl was a real ship with derision. However, after seeing and fighting against the undead pirates, Mullroy appeared to alter his opinions. When Cotton's parrot dirtied Mullroy's jacket with its droppings, Mullroy was content to leave it there when Murtogg told him it was a sign of good luck--soon after, Murtogg's face was dirtied by the parrot, and Mullroy wiped the droppings from his face onto his jacket.
