The Kingfishers were the classification of large, two-masted war sloops in the service of the British Royal Navy. These ships are the apex of the sloop concept in the Navy, and were crewed by experienced veterans of combat with pirates and other threats of the sea, both natural and not. A number of vessels of this class patrolled the Caribbean, including several near the shore of Port Royal, ostensibly to aid in the defense of the fort. These ships, despite their sleek design, were better armed than some of the lighter frigates of the Navy, as well as the Corvette cousins they dwarfed.
