"It could be a trick. Like a Trojan horse—anything could be inside. Approach with caution—do not get close to be boarded! Just shoot at the ship from afar! Nothing to worry about, my European friends. Foolish pirates often try to prove their strength by attacking King Samuel. And then they prove their mortality—by dying."
―King Samuel[src]

King Samuel was a Pirate Lord of the Atlantic Ocean who engaged in slave trading. He had a pirate fort near Libertalia, where he was despised for his conduct in the slave market.

Biography[]

Not much is known about Samuel's early life, except that he became a pirate and eventually rose to the position of a Pirate Lord of the Atlantic Ocean. Despite his lordship over the Atlantic, he made his residence in a fortified stronghold on the west coast of Madagascar, in the Indian Ocean. Over the years his power grew so much that he started calling himself a king. He also openly violated the Pirate's Code by making deals with Dutch and Portuguese slave traders, selling them prisoners as slaves and letting their slave ships sail through his waters undisturbed. His actions incurred the wrath of the nearby pirates of Libertalia, but since Samuel was too strong to defeat, they were forced to live in an uneasy truce alongside him.

Through the actions of Tia Dalma's zombie, Alex, King Samuel gained possession of one of the vials of the Shadow Gold. However, he never learned its importance.

At some point in his life, Samuel sold Jocard into slavery. Later on in his life Jocard attacked Samuel's fort with Captain Jack Sparrow during Captain Sparrow's quest for the Shadow Gold. A battle ensued and resulted in Jocard and his crew overpowering King Samuel. Jocard relieved Samuel of his Piece of Eight and Captain Jack relieved him of his vial of Shadow Gold. Samuel was knocked out by Gentleman Jocard who had attacked his fort to stop Samuel from selling anyone else into slavery.

Personality and traits[]

"Ah. That explains this foolhardy attack. Revenge, is it? Listen, if I had to explain myself to every ignorant child I've sold into slavery, I'd never have time for anything else. That's the way the world works. I'm a pirate, you know. I'll take my money however I can get it."
"A true pirate still has some honor. And a man who calls himself a king should have more care for his subjects.
"
―King Samuel and Jocard[src]

King Samuel was vain, often telling tales of his masculine deeds. He was also known to refer to himself in the third-person at all times. His actions were mostly motivated by greed, and he was villing to make deals with Dutch and Portuguese slave traders, as well as the agents of the East India Trading Company, the traditional enemies of the pirates.

King Samuel enjoyed exotic animals such as zebras, giraffes and gorillas. He captured a few to roam his palace.

Equipment and skills[]

King Samuel was known to possess at least one dagger and one pistol, both of which he used to subdue his opponents. Samuel possessed a unique Piece of Eight, as did all of the Pirate Lords. It was an old rusty-looking tobacco cutter.
