Gretchen is a sloop owned by Andrew Bowdash, pirate governor of Tortuga. She is named after Gretchen, love interest of Bowdash, who intended to give her a ship as a gift. However, Gretchen was "borrowed" by John Smith, who later clashed with Royal Navy frigate the Panther. During the battle, Gretchen was heavily damaged by cannon fire from the Panther and Smith was forced to ran her aground on Driftwood Island to prevent sinking.
