- "Only God can grant eternal life. Not this pagan water."
- ―The Spaniard
God is viewed as the singular supreme being, creator, and principal object of religion and faith. In some belief systems, the name was given to a spirit or being believed to have created, or for controlling some part of the universe or life, for which such a deity is often worshipped. Some traditions attach spiritual significance to maintaining some form of relationship with God, often involving acts such as worship and prayer, and see God as the source of all moral obligation.
Behind the scenes[]
- "Keep the ship. The men are of no use to us. Hang them all."
"No mercy?"
"Mercy is an aspect of God, who is far better suited to judge these men than I." - ―James Norrington and Davy Jones
- God was first mentioned in the 2003 junior novelization[1] for Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.[2]
- Unlike the 2003 junior novelization[1] and film,[2] where Joshamee Gibbs gasps "Mary, mother of God!", the 2006 junior novelization had Gibbs mutter, "Mother of all that's holy..."[3]
- In Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio's original script draft of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl when Jack Sparrow and Elizabeth Swann ended up marooned on Rumrunner's Isle Jack praised the Lord several times for all the shade trees, food, and rum.
- God would be mentioned as an interjection in Tim Powers' novel On Stranger Tides, which would be used as inspiration for the 2011 film Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
- In Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio's screenplay for On Stranger Tides, Blackbeard sneered to the missionary Philip Swift about the Cook's fate, claiming that the missionary prayed only for what chance might offer on its own, "lest the weakness of your God be revealed." Later, as Blackbeard threatened Syrena at the Jungle Pools, Philip's resolve breaks as he tells Blackbeard he is sundered from God forever. When the HMS Providence sailed to Whitecap Bay, its crew dispersed to their tasks, Joshamee Gibbs watches a deserter swim away and says, "And may God have mercy on our souls."[4] The scenes and lines never made it into the final cut, but the scene with an apprehensive Gibbs was retained in the film's junior novelization.[5]
