Justice Smith and Foreman[src]

This man was a resident of London, England.

Biography[]

In 1750, he was known to be the foreman during the trial against Joshamee Gibbs, a prisoner who was mistaken to be the infamous pirate Captain Jack Sparrow, that took place at the Old Bailey in London. Sparrow himself presided over the trial as the "right honorable Justice Smith" and requested that the jury to find the verdict. Unsure how to render a verdict without a trial or examining the evidence, despite knowing a guilty verdict means the prisoner would hang, the foreman responded, "Guilty?" As the crowd of people in the courtroom roared their approval of the foreman's guilty verdict in anticipation of the hanging, "Smith" instead condemned Gibbs to a life sentence in prison. The foreman was still in the courtroom as the assembled mob was booing, hissing, and grocery-hurling while the prisoner was arranged to be transported to the Tower of London.[1][2]
