References to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise in various media, notably films, television, music and videogames.
Film[]
Billy & Mandy's Big Boogey Adventure[]
- The villain Boogey tells his assistant, Creeper, to summon the Kraken. This is an obvious reference to Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest where Davy Jones wakes the Kraken prior to the destruction of the Edinburgh Trader. Also the fact that Boogey's ship has black sails may also be a reference to the Black Pearl.
Captain America: The First Avenger[]
- Jim Byrkit got teased sometimes by friends who knew that he suggested the line "I can do this all day" for Will Turner to say while he's tied up fighting off the Pelegostos Tribe in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. They joke that Byrkit somehow triggered Captain America's biggest catchphrase. But in reality, he must have heard it somewhere as well. Byrkit thought Will needed a moment to show his undaunted spirit and signal to the audience why he wouldn't just give up after being trapped, and so he suggested it to Gore Verbinski as they storyboarded the scene and it made its way into the film's script.[1]
Corpse Bride[]
- When Victor Van Dort (voiced by Johnny Depp) pulls out Emily's skeletal hand from the ground, the hand starts following him, dragging itself through the dirt only by the use of its fingers. This is reminiscent of Governor Weatherby Swann's fight with a severed skeletal hand in the captain's cabin of the HMS Dauntless in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.
Captain Ron[]
- The title character, Captain Ron, buys guns to keep away the "Pirates of the Caribbean". Martin Harvey tells him that he's spent to much time at Disneyland.
Dark Shadows[]
- Footage of the stolen HMS Interceptor sailing in the sea was reused for young Barnabas Collins' journey from England to the New World in the beginning of the film, though the flag was red instead of blue. Barnabas as an adult was also portrayed by Johnny Depp, who played Jack Sparrow in the Pirates franchise.
Doctor Who[]
- In the 2011 Season, episode "The Curse of the Black Spot" features numerous references, including the episode title, taking place on a pirate ship, characters being marked by a black spot, walking the plank, a sword-fighting heroine, and a "a stroppy, homicidal mermaid." The Doctor also says "Yo ho ho!" when meeting the ship's crew.
Doogal[]
- A skeleton refers to himself and his friends as Pirates of the Caribbean. Another skeleton tells him they agreed to no Disney jokes.
Epic Movie[]

- Jack Sparrow is spoofed as "Captain Jack Swallows", whose dialogue is purposely difficult to understand.
The Fog[]
- In the opening sequence the flag of the burning ship is shown for a short time, which resembles similar shots in The Curse of the Black Pearl and Dead Man's Chest.
Jurassic Park[]
- In the first film, John Hammond said all major theme parks have delays, using Disneyland as an example, saying nothing worked on the first day. Ian Malcolm then points out, "if the Pirates of the Caribbean breaks down, the pirates don't eat the tourists."
Justice Society: World War II[]
- During the final battle Wonder Woman breaks Aquaman's trident, freeing him from Psycho Pirate's control, reminiscing the scene from Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. In some DC comics, Aquaman's weapon was called the Trident of Poseidon, like the trident featured throughout the Pirates franchise, notably the Jack Sparrow book series and Dead Men Tell No Tales.
The Lone Ranger[]
- In the second trailer officially released, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Gore Verbinski's contribution to the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy was noted on the trailer by the appearance of the film's skull logo. This is because of the cast and crew of the film were part of the filmmaking team that had participated in the Pirates franchise, including actor Johnny Depp, screenwriters Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, and executive producers Mike Stenson, Chad Oman, and Eric McLeod.[2]
Once Upon a Time in Mexico[]
- Agent Sands (who is portrayed by Johnny Depp) uses the word "savvy".
Pan[]
- While telling Peter to kneel, Bishop announces Blackbeard as the "pirate all pirates fear!"
- Blackbeard is portrayed by Hugh Jackman, who was initially considered for the role of Jack Sparrow.

Puss in Boots[]
- The film is a spin-off relating to a swashbuckler, similar to Jack Sparrow, who meets an equal, similar to Angelica, in which they would either help each other or fight against one another. Rodrigo y Gabriela also play guitar music at points in the film. A trailer included a sample of "Too Many Notes - Not Enough Rests" from the soundtrack to Drop Zone, which was featured in The Curse of the Black Pearl trailer. An extended clip, released from Nick.com, had parts of "Walk the Plank" during the sword fight scene.[3]
Rango[]
- The film was directed by Gore Verbinski, who directed the Pirates of the Caribbean Trilogy, who also portrayed Sergeant Turley, a wild turkey; Crevice, Slim, a vulture; and Lupe, a member of the Mariachi band of owls. James Ward Byrkit, who was the conceptual consultant for Pirates Trilogy and director of the short film Tales of the Code: Wedlocked, helped Verbinski with the story as well as portrayed Waffles, a horned lizard; Gordy, Papa Joad, and Cousin Murt. Craig Wood was the editor, Hans Zimmer did the music, and Crash McCreery did character design work for the film.
- Johnny Depp, who portrayed Jack Sparrow in Pirates, voiced the title character, an eccentric but intelligent and heroic chameleon. In an interview, Depp said it was inspired by how he portrayed Sparrow's mannerisms: "I've always had an affinity for lizards. When (director) Gore (Verbinski) and I were doing Pirates 1,2, 3 and Captain Jack had to run, it was a very specific run that I wanted. I saw this footage of a lizard running across the water and it was the strangest thing I've ever seen. So I said, 'Gore it's gotta be like a lizard running,' and he said absolutely. So I feel that Rango was planted in Gore's brain from that lizard run. When he actually called me and said I want you to play a lizard I said, 'I'm halfway there!'"[4]
- Bill Nighy, who portrayed Davy Jones in Pirates, as Rattlesnake Jake.
- The likeness of Benicio del Toro was briefly used to represent his character of Dr. Gonzo from Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas in a cameo appearance, alongside Johnny Depp as Raoul Duke. Although this may be coincidental, del Toro was one of the actors considered to portray Blackbeard in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
- The scene where Rango falls unconscious followed by hundreds of pillbugs carrying him away from the "other side" across the desert could be a reference to At World's End, where Jack Sparrow falls unconscious before hundreds of crabs carry the Black Pearl across the Land of the Dead.
- The music that plays during Rango and Jake's standoff is similar to "Parlay" track.
Star Wars[]
- In Solo: A Star Wars Story, Woody Harrelson portrayed Tobias Beckett. Early fan speculation was that Harrelson would be playing Garris Shrike—Han Solo's mentor in the Star Wars Legends continuity who first appeared in A. C. Crispin's The Han Solo Trilogy book series—but this was disproved when Harrelson revealed Beckett's name on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.[5] According to screenwriters Lawrence Kasdan and Jon Kasdan, Beckett is based on Long John Silver, the main antagonist of Robert Louis Stevenson's 1883 novel Treasure Island.[6] Although it is unconfirmed, it is possible that the name (Tobias) Beckett could be a reference to Cutler Beckett, as both characters had a hand in the backstories of both Han Solo and Jack Sparrow.
- Several Weequay characters were created for Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi, specifically working for Jabba the Hutt and met their demise during the rescue of Han Solo. Two of the characters went unnamed for thirty-seven years until their names were revealed in other Star Wars media, identifying them by the full names of Rintel Aren and Pagetti Rook. With the first letters swapped, they share their first names with the pirate duo Pintel and Ragetti. The last names are based on the last names of their actors, Lee Arenberg and Mackenzie Crook.
Suicide Squad[]
- Dr. June Moone, an American archaeologist, becomes possessed by the Enchantress, a witch who is virtually unstoppable with the only weakness being her heart, which is separated from her body. The Enchantress's magical heart is was obtained by intelligence officer Amanda Waller, who used the heart to control her. Although the Enchantress regained her heart, thereby becoming more powerful, Rick Flag crushes the heart, killing the Enchantress and releasing Moone.
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street[]
- The first trailer featured music that was heard in the beginning of the trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, though it could be a coincidence. Sweeney Todd also stars Johnny Depp as the title character.
Underworld[]
- Underworld: Rise of the Lycans featuring a relationship between Lucian and Sonja, a blacksmith and the ruler Viktor's beloved daughter, is similar to The Curse of the Black Pearl, which features blacksmith Will Turner and the governor's daughter Elizabeth Swann having feelings for each other. Lucian is a Lycan and Will is a pirate, both frowned upon in their respective films. Viktor was portrayed by Bill Nighy, though Nighy already portrayed the character in the previous two films before portraying Davy Jones in the Pirates franchise. Like Davy does to Will in Dead Man's Chest, Viktor orders Lucian to be lashed with a cat o' nine tails. Viktor also engages in a sword fight in the rain like At World's End, though fairly different as it was to his daughter rather than an enemy.
- In Underworld: Awakening, during the final battle the vampire warrior Selene punches a hole on the stomach of the giant werewolf Quint Lane and stuffs a silver grenade in it. When his wound instantly heals, he is unable to take the grenade out before it explodes. This is a possible reference to The Curse of the Black Pearl, when Will Turner puts a grenade between Jacoby's ribs and moves him away from the moonlight, making him unable to take the grenade out before it explodes.

- The series is set in the Caribbean during the Golden Age of Piracy. The historical characters include Anne Bonny, Calico Jack Rackham, Edward Low, Blackbeard, and Mary Read. The main pirate base in the series is Nassau. The main character, Captain Flint, aims to become the Pirate King. A place called the Wrecks, similar to Shipwreck City, is located on New Providence. In Episode II. when Captain Flint, Mister Gates, and Billy Bones search for John Silver in Nassau everbody gives them different directions, a possible nod to Will Turner's search for Jack Sparrow at the beginning of Dead Man's Chest.

But on the wall there's a movie poster, and it says, 'Pirates of the Caribbean 6: The Haunted Crow's Nest or Whatever, Who Gives a Crap?' Then at the bottom it says, 'Playing in every theatre, everywhere, forever. I like it for many reasons, but the No. 1 reason I like it is that the implication is that that's where those movies are made, and then they're exported up here. That's where they come from; they're made in hell."[8][9]

DC's Legends of Tomorrow[]
- The season 3 episode "The Curse of the Earth Totem" has several references to the Pirates franchise:
- The title is a reference to Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Like the film and original Disneyland ride, there is a curse involved.
- Edward Teach/Blackbeard and the Queen Anne's Revenge references the main antagonist and his ship which appear in On Stranger Tides, the fourth film in the film series. However, Edward Teach's mannerisms in this episode are more similar to those of Captain Jack Sparrow. The Revenge was also portrayed by the Lady Washington, which portrayed the Interceptor in The Curse of the Black Pearl.
- As Blackbeard and Anne Queen are walking ashore onto Grace Island in the Bahamas 1717, Anne softly sings, "15 men on a dead man's chest, yo ho ho and a bottle of rum". That song comes from a real-world pirate shanty featured in Robert Louis Stevenson's novel Treasure Island which also appears in the second film, Dead Man's Chest.
- In trying to hype up "Dread Pirate Jiwe", Ray Palmer claims that no one has heard of her as "dead men tell no tales", which is a phrase said throughout the franchise and is the title of the fifth film of the same name in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series. It was also she lost her ship to a Kraken, and was spat back in hell by the devil himself, which were referenced in the earlier films.
- When Gideon reports that the Waverider was parked in the middle of the Bermuda Triangle, Nate Heywood points out that sailors called it the Devil's Triangle, with Ray then saying the stories of ships disappearing are grossly exaggerated. In Dead Men Tell No Tales, Captain Salazar's ghostly crew were cursed to haunt the Devil's Triangle.
- Lieutenant Robert Maynard led Damien Darhk, disguised as an admiral, straight to Blackbeard and his associates. Maynard comments on being promoted to commodore after beheading Blackbeard, which could be a reference to James Norrington.
- As Rip Hunter attempts to have another drink, his flask appears to be empty. This could be a reference to Jack Sparrow with an empty bottle of rum in Dead Man's Chest.
- In the season 5 episode "The Great British Fake Off", Black Caesar makes an appearance with his compass, which serves as a reference to Jack Sparrow's compass in that the compass is used for tracking.
The Legend of Vox Machina[]

- In Season 2, Episode 3, on a quest to find a powerful weapon capable of killing a god, members of Vox Machina, with the help of Zahra Hydris and Kashaw Vesh, part the waters of lake Osysa, opening a way into the sunken tomb of Purvan Suul.

This could be reminiscent of Jack Sparrow dealing with an impostor in On Stranger Tides, with Jack asking Gibbs, "There is another Jack Sparrow out there sullying my good name?"
Luke Cage[]
- In Luke Cage: 2.06: The Basement, Pirates of the Caribbean was referenced in a conversation with Tom Ridenhour and Mariah Dillard.
Mad[]
- A parody called Pirates of the Neverland: At Wit's End has Jack Sparrow try to help Captain Hook defeat Peter Pan by teaching him his method of pirating. It ends with Jack helping Cap'n Munch with a squid cereal.
- A parody called Pirates of the Pair of Tweens uses elements from On Stranger Tides and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, another Johnny Depp film. After finding the Fountain of Youth, Angelica and Blackbeard drink its waters in the hopes of living forever. However, the waters work too well and the pair are regressed into children in their tweens. Much to Jack Sparrow's dismay, he was forced to take care of them. He reluctantly takes them to the mall, where they do nothing but shop and play without end. Eventually, Jack had enough and turned to Willy Wonka for help. Wonka had a formula made, disguised as milkshakes, which Jack gives to the kids. Unfortunately, the formula causes the kids to turn into anamorphic blueberries that swell up and explode. Wonka explains that there was a mix-up from his new workers.

- In the Halloween 2006 edition, host Paul O'Grady dressed up as Captain Jack Sparrow, although he claimed he felt more like Russell Brand—whose mannerisms and appearance have been compared to Sparrow elsewhere.
Once Upon a Time (ABC TV Series)[]
- The main character's name is Emma Swan, who share similarities with Elizabeth Swann, who was the protagonist of the overarching story of the Pirates trilogy, with screenwriters Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio stating that it's always been her story. Similar parallels between the two characters include:
- They share the same initials; Emma Swan and Elizabeth Swann.
- Everyone they love die or being taken from her.
- Both having a hard time committing to their girly side. Emma wore jeans and a leather jacket most of the time throughout the series, and Elizabeth hates the corset which was the "lastest fashion in London" according to her father.
- Pirates being in their group of friends and caring for them.
- Having previously appeared as Pintel in the Pirates franchise, Lee Arenberg stars as Grumpy in the TV series. He is also the only cast member to appear in all seven seasons of Once Upon a Time and its spin-off.
- On an Entertainment Weekly interview with showrunners Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, when asked about characters they'd consider adding to the show, including Jack Sparrow: "We loved [Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl] so much. But unless we get Johnny Depp, how could we do Jack Sparrow?"[10]
- Captain Killian Jones aka Captain Hook had a guest-starring role starting with second season before becoming a series regular until the seventh and final season. Since his appearance, the series made references to the Pirates franchise as a whole:
- While the character shares more than a few similarities to Captain Jack Sparrow, the name "Killian Jones" could be a reference to Davy Jones.
- Captain Hook's ship, the Jolly Roger, was portrayed by the Lady Washington, the same ship which portrayed the HMS Interceptor in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. The Jolly Roger was stolen from the royal navy, just like the Interceptor was. The Jolly Roger is said to be the fastest vessel in all the realms, whereas the Interceptor was the fastest ship in the Caribbean, with the Black Pearl being the faster. A real ship was used to shoot the episodes "The Crocodile" and "Queen of Hearts" because the production crew did not have time to build a ship set. However, the Lady Washington was unavailable for the rest of Season Two, because it had to go to "some tall ship's event", so the crew built a pirate ship set on a floating barge. The Lady Washington returned to portray the Jolly Roger in Season Six and the Season Seven episode "A Pirate's Life".
- 2x06 Tallahassee: The way Emma distracts Hook (taking his hand) before chaining him up is similar to the scene in Dead Man's Chest, where Elisabeth distracts Jack by kissing him before chaining him up.
- 2x10 "The Cricket Game": In the opening scene, Hook is shown from behind, standing on a yard while holding on to it with his left appendage, and looking at the town of Storybrooke while the camera zooms in on him. The camera then zooms in on his face as his hair is blowing in the wind. Hook then grabs a rope that was next to the mast, hangs on to it and jumps to the deck below. This is almost exactly like Captain Jack Sparrow's introduction in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.
- 2x22 "And Straight On 'Til Morning": after learning Baelfire is Milah's son, Captain Hook decides to keep Baelfire as part of his crew and tells Bae "It's a pirates life for you, mate," which references the song "Yo Ho (A Pirate's Life for Me)" from the Pirates franchise. Later Hook mentioned to Smee "Anyone who doubts me may walk the plank, and may the mermaids have mercy on their soul!" This may be a reference to the mermaids in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, as they eat men, and the "mercy on their soul" part may be a nod to Barbossa's quote: "Cling to your soul, Gibbs, for mermaids be given to take the rest. To the bone!"
- 3x17 "The Jolly Roger": the title references Captain Hook's ship also features Black Beard temporarily stealing the Jolly Roger from Hook. Black Beard's clothing and appearance is also reminiscent of Disney's Peter Pan version of Captain Hook, though his tricorn hat was similar to Ian McShane's Blackbeard in On Stranger Tides.
- 4x15 "Poor Unfortunate Soul": Hook seeing the Jolly Roger in a bottle is likely a reference to Jack seeing the Black Pearl as a ship in a bottle in On Stranger Tides.
- 4x22 "Operation Mongoose Part 2": While trapped in Isaac's book, Emma calls Hook a "regular Jack Sparrow".
- 6x12 Murder Most Foul: the episode's title could be a reference to Jack Sparrow's line in On Stranger Tides: "Mutiny most foul." Hook tells Robert, "Dead men tell no tales", a phrase famously quoted throughout the Pirates franchise.
- 3x01 "The Heart of the Truest Believer": the episode features a journey to Neverland, with Hook leading the characters, where they are greeted by a school of not-too-friendly mermaids. Having previously appeared as Cabin Boy in On Stranger Tides, Robbie Kay makes his first appearance as Peter Pan in the series.
- 4x22 "Operation Mongoose Part 1": At Isaac's book signing, there is a girl dressed up in a Jack Sparrow outfit.
- 7x02 "A Pirate's Life": the episode title could be a reference to "Yo Ho (A Pirate's Life for Me)" from the Pirates franchise or possibly the song of the same name from Disney's Peter Pan, where it is sung by Captain Hook's pirate crew.
- 7x16 "Breadcrumbs": Davy Jones is mentioned as an ancient pirate who gained the title of "Pirate King", and hides an ancient treasure chest buried at the bottom of the sea, Davy Jones' Locker, which also makes an appearance. Hook persuades Black Beard, Smee, and the rest of the Jolly Roger crew to take part in a ruse to give Henry a grand adventure, and in return, he will split the treasure with them three ways. After pretending to steal the map from Hook, Black Beard has the Jolly Roger sail to the Locker's location, where it's pulled up from underwater.

In the second episode, "Rusalye", Malyen "Mal" Oretsev said one of his gadgets and weaponry "impossible," Sturmhond responds, "When people say 'impossible,' they usually mean 'improbable.'"
Spongebob Squarepants[]
- "A Pirate's Life For Me" is an instrumental track composed by Ron Goodwin, which is usually played during adventurous and heroic moments.
- Ian McShane voiced Gordon, the captain of a Viking crew, in the season 6 episode "Dear Vikings" which aired in 2008. This episode was prior to McShane's role as Blackbeard in the fourth Pirates movie, On Stranger Tides, which released in 2011.
- Johnny Depp was first seen in a "Back to School Season" commercial short in 2007, where a clip of Depp getting slimed at the 2005 Kids' Choice Awards was shown. Depp also provided the voice of Jack Kahuna Laguna in the season 6 special episode "SpongeBob SquarePants vs. The Big One" which aired in 2009. Jack Kahuna Laguna bears a striking resemblance to Depp, and the name could be a reference to Captain Jack Sparrow. The actor was also mentioned in "Truth or Square" when Triumph the Insulting Comic Dog thinks Patchy the Pirate is Johnny Depp in disguise.
- The season 12 episode "Escape from Beneath Glove World" featured cultural references to Disney Parks, including Pirates of the Caribbean. Hieronymus Glove is a parody of Walt Disney, and Glove being cryogenically frozen is a reference to a long-standing urban legend which maintains that Walt Disney was cryonically frozen in the Pirates of he Caribbean attraction. During the movie at the Glove World! Theater, three mice can be seen wearing matching ears and gloves that are reminiscent of Mickey Mouse's design. A group of animatronics in the Glove World jail references pirate inmates and the Prison Dog in the Pirates of the Caribbean, except it's a little green worm with the keys.
The Simpsons[]
- In Season 21 episode four "Treehouse of Horror XX", Captain Jack Sparrow is dressed up as a mummy.
- The Simpsons Ride in both Universal Studios Florida and Universal Studios Hollywood referenced both Pirates of the Caribbean and The Haunted Mansion, as "Captain Dinosaur's Pirate Rip-Off" and "Haunted Condo" (which is mentioned as being closed for "annual ghostbusting"), in the pre-show video loops. Pirates was referenced in the ride itself as Homer and Marge go on "Captain Dinosaur's" boat ride, where they go down a waterfall, see Sideshow Bob appear in a waterfall similar to Davy Jones in Dead Man's Cove, then enter scenes similar to the pirate attack on Puerto Dorado.
