Shanghaiing refers to the practice of conscripting men as sailors by coercive techniques such as trickery, intimidation, or violence in a form of kidnapping. The related term press-gang refers specifically to impressment practices most notably used in Great Britain's Royal Navy.

History

After Jack Sparrow helped Christophe-Julien de Rapièr break out of the dungeons of Shipwreck City in the name of friendship, Christophe fled the city, taking Jack captive and forcing him to work aboard La Vipère. Upon meeting with the presumably-dead Bootstrap Bill Turner aboard the Black Pearl, Jack Sparrow assumed that Bootstrap Bill had been shanghaied into service by Davy Jones, though Booststrap Bill admitted that he chose freely to serve aboard the Flying Dutchman. Several years later, Jack Sparrow would be shanghaied aboard Blackbeard's infamous vessel, the Queen Anne's Revenge, by Angelica.
