"Borya gave up the second rogue that Davy Jones spoke of? The one he said was here in Shipwreck Cove? Who...who was it?"
"Turns out it was that popinjay, styles himself de Rapièr. That foppish dandy must’ve twigged that the Little Butcher might sing, ’cause he was caught with his longboats out, towing his brigantine, tryin’ to make it to the tunnel and clean away.

The Devil's Throat was a perilous sea tunnel leading through Shipwreck Island. It was the main passageway for any vessel attempting to enter Shipwreck Cove.

History[]

Creation and design[]

"It's deep enough for the ship's draw. I would never have believed it."
"If you knew how many died while dredging it, you'd believe it.

The Devil's Throat was the only way into the volcanic crater that housed Shipwreck City. Many died making it deep enough for a ship's draw. Every year, its treacherous passage, which was known to be a trick to navigate, claimed several vessels that dared sail through. These wrecks were subsequently added to the assembly of derelict ships that comprised the ship-wrecked city itself.

Journey through the passage[]

"Step out, Mister Cotton. There's some dangerous cross tides ahead that will prove a trick to navigate."

During the War Against Piracy, many ships passed through this passage to reach Shipwreck Cove to meet with the Fourth Brethren Court. Shortly before the Brethren conclave, the Black Pearl sailed through the deadly passage, with Jack Sparrow at the helm. While they were passing through, Pintel and Ragetti weren't sure if they liked the passage until Hector Barbossa told them the passage's name, which stroke fear into their minds. Joshamee Gibbs examined the tunnel and, though he couldn't believe it, found that it was deep enough for a ship's draw.

Behind the scenes[]

"What is this place?"
"I don't know, but I don't like it."
"Welcome to the Devil's Throat.

  • In Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, only the inner entrance of Devil's Throat, which led straight to Shipwreck Cove, appeared. The tunnel itself never appeared, save for a few of the film's behind the scene featurettes. It wasn't until the seven-disc Pirates of the Caribbean Trilogy in Blu-ray Collection was released, in 2011, where a deleted scene involving the journey through the Devil's Throat was shown, although the special effects were incomplete.
  • Coincidentally, there was a "Devil's Throat" location on a map used to promote the 2003 video game Pirates of the Caribbean. However, unlike the films' universe, this location is on the island of Redmond.
