- "Hold here, Lieutenant Commander. Wait for my signal."
- ―Hector Barbossa to Theodore Groves
Lieutenant Commander was a rank in the British Royal Navy during the 18th century. Lieutenant Commander lies above Lieutenant and below Commander. They were the most senior lieutenants onboard a ship, and generally held the position of First Officer.
During Hector Barbossa's time as a privateer of King George's court, Theodore Groves served as a Lieutenant Commander aboard the HMS Providence during the quest for the Fountain of Youth.

Behind the scenes
- In real-world history, this rank was first used by the US Navy in 1862.
- For unknown reasons, in promotions for On Stranger Tides, Theodore Groves was referred to as "Lieutenant" rather than "Lieutenant Commander". This can be seen in the film's visual guide and junior novel, as well as on the description of a promotional image.[1]
