Mister Coote was a pirate who operated in the Caribbean during the early 18th century.

Biography[]

Nothing is known about Coote's early life. One day, he joined the pirate crew of the of the Wicked Wench. He participated in the Pirate Captain's raid on the Spanish island of Isla Tesoro. The pirate crew was able to successfully invade the town of Puerto Dorado, before ransacking and burning it.

During the attack, Coote and several of his fellow pirates had penetrated the town's subterranean arsenal, where they found themselves surrounded by a seemingly limitless supply of gunpowder. Thinking the barrels contained rum rather than the clearly marked "EXPLOSIVOS", the buccaneers indulged in a little drunken target practice, taking aim at the powder kegs from opposite sides of the waterway. Oblivious to the danger, Coote was sprawled across a cannon, drunkenly singing "A Pirate's Life for Me" as he carelessly let off rounds of gun-fire.[2][3] It is presumed that he and the other pirates in the arsenal perished in the resulting explosion.[4]

Behind the scenes[]

"Avast there, Billie 'ow—Les see yer pop a 'ole in one o' them there rummmm barrels—Hah, har!"
"Lor' love me, mate. I'll do 'er with me eyes closed.
"
―Mister Coote and Billie How[src] (1965 script)
  • The name "Mister Coote" was christened by X Atencio upon seeing the buccaneer in a sketch made by Marc Davis.[1]
  • In Walt Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean attraction at Disneyland, it is implied that Mister Coote and his mates are about to die in a fiery blast from their own foolishness, as their pistol shots narrowly miss kegs of gunpowder. The finale shootout scene is embellished with a superimposed explosion effect in the 1968 Wonderful World of Disney episode, "Disneyland: From the Pirates of the Caribbean to the World of Tomorrow".
  • In Walt Disney World, Mister Coote was also featured in a Treasure Room sequence that existed in place of the Disneyland California Arsenal scene, where the pirates found the town's treasure room, and he drunkenly fired his pistol as the Pirate Captain sat on him. The pirates were all scrapped and replaced in that scene by Jack Sparrow in 2006.
  • A scene from On Stranger Tides featured Jack Sparrow sitting on a cannon in a similar manner as Mister Coote. Jack's pose of sitting on a cannon could be considered a reference to the Disney ride; the film crew were aware of the ride for those poses, and noted that there would be a similarity, which is why the cannon setting was called out in the screenplay.
