- "Jack, that time we met in Barbados, I didn't know whether I ever wanted to speak to you again."
- ―Esmeralda to Jack Sparrow
Barbados was an island in the Lesser Antilles, one of many British colonies in the Caribbean.
History[]
- "I stowed away on the first fishing vessel I could find that was headed to Barbados. My uncle lives there."
- ―Timothy Hawk to Jack Sparrow
The first inhabitants of Barbados were the Arawak Indians. They were driven off the island in 1200 AD by the invading Carib Indians from Venezuela. The Caribs abandoned Barbados by the time the first European sailed in to the region.
In 1536, Portuguese explorer Pedro a Campos discovered the island en route to Brazil. He named the island Los Barbados, meaning the 'Bearded One' after the island's Fig Trees whose long hanging aerial roots had a beard-like resemblance.
In 1625, Captain John Powell landed and claimed the uninhabited island for England. Two years later, his brother, Captain Henry Powell, landed with a party of eighty settlers and ten slaves. More settlers followed in their wake, and by the end of 1628 the population was around two thousand.
The colonists originally planted the fields with tobacco and cotton, but by 1640 they had discovered the potential of sugarcane. To meet the labor demands of the new crop, they began to import large amounts of African slaves. The first large sugar cane plantations in the Caribbean became immensely profitable. In 1663, Barbados was made into an English Crown Possession, and by the mid 1600s, the planters and merchants were thriving. By the beginning of the 1700s, slaves were imported to Barbados by ships belonging to the East India Trading Company.
Jack Sparrow once encountered his old friend Esmeralda in Barbados. A few years later, when Jack became a merchant captain in the East India Trading Company, his ship, the Wicked Wench, sailed a few miles off the east coast of Barbados. Jack saw the island in the distance through his spyglass.[2]
