Jack Sparrow and Fitzwilliam in a duel.

"I challenge you to a duel. I win, you let me come with you. I lose, I leave and tell no one what I have seen here, or any of your plans."
"Oh, Fitzy, I would
love to. But, as it happens, I have yet to acquire the sword I really want. No sword, no duel. No boarding the ship for you. So sorry."
Fitzwilliam P. Dalton III and Jack Sparrow[src]

A duel is a battle between two or three people. In many duels, people wielded swords, pistols or any sort of weapon. Many individuals, such as pirates, have been known to engage in duels.

History[]

"Put it away, son. It's not worth you getting beat again."
"You didn't beat me. You ignored the rules of engagement. In a fair fight, I'd kill you."
"Then that's not much incentive for me to fight fair, then, is it?
"
Jack Sparrow and Will Turner[src]

Duels in this form were chiefly practiced in early modern Europe, with precedents in the medieval code of chivalry among military officers. During the 17th and 18th centuries, and earlier, duels were mostly fought with swords (the rapier, the smallsword, and the French foil). Pistols were sometimes known to be used in duels as well. Although there were many who followed the fair ways of fighting in duels, there were those who fought dirty, mostly in their desire to win the duel or survive.

Notable Duels[]

Duels that occurred in the Pirates of the Caribbean films.

The Curse of the Black Pearl[]

Duel in John Brown's smithy[]

"Do you think this wise, boy? Crossing blades with a pirate?"
"You threatened Miss Swann."
"...Only a little.

Jack Sparrow and Will Turner[src]
Duelists Circumstance Outcome
Jack Sparrow used John Brown's smithy as a hiding place to break his manacles after escaping Commodore James Norrington and his men of the Royal Navy. Will Turner arrived shortly afterwards and confronted Jack, who thought Will seemed "somewhat familiar". After Will realized that Jack was the pirate who had threatened Elizabeth Swann, a woman he cared deeply about, he engaged Sparrow in a duel. Will would soon disarm Jack in their fight. However, through cheating, Jack would ultimately win the duel by pulling out his pistol, aiming it at Will. As Will blocked Jack's exit, Jack pleaded to Will to step aside, in which he refused. Even when he desperately didn't intend to do so, Jack prepared to shoot Will, so he could escape. But before he had the chance, Jack was knocked out by Mr. Brown and was captured by Norrington and his men.

Hector Barbossa and his crew arrived to Isla de Muerta with Will Turner to lift the curse of Cortés. Jack Sparrow interrupted the ritual and enter negotiations with Barbossa, which ends with Barbossa sending all but a few of his crewman to attack the HMS Dauntless and Jack stealing one of the cursed Aztec gold from the Chest of Cortés. Shortly after, the battle begins as Jack throws a sword to Will, who fights Barbossa's crewmen, while Jack dueled with Barbossa.----Will Turner would fight Jacoby, Weatherby, and Monk alone through the battle. As he was about to be killed, Elizabeth Swann arrived to save Will and assist him in battle. Elizabeth Swann helped Will in defeating Barbossa's crewmen as Jack threw his Aztec coin to Will. Barbossa prepared to shoot Elizabeth until Jack shot him in the heart with his last pistol shot. Will, having sliced the palm of his hand with the sacrificial knife and covering the coins with his blood, dropped both his and Jack's coins into the chest. With the coins returned and the blood repaid, the curse was lifted and Barbossa died.

Dead Man's Chest[]

Duel on Isla Cruces[]

"How'd this go all screwy?"
"Well, each wants the chest for hisself, don't he? Mr. Norrington, I think, is trying to regain a bit of honor. Ol' Jack's looking to trade it, save his own skin. And Turner there, I think he's trying to settle some unresolved business twixt him and his twice-cursed pirate father.
"

Duelists Circumstance Outcome
Jack Sparrow, Elizabeth Swann, and James Norrington headed off to find the Dead Man's Chest in Isla Cruces. After they found the chest and dug it up, Will Turner showed up on the beach shore. Will then pulled the key to the chest out, which he had stolen from Davy Jones and prepared to stab Jones' heart. But Jack, Will, and Norrington all want the heart for different reasons:
  • Jack: if Jones was slain, no one would call off the Kraken.
  • Will: he was going to free his father by stabbing the heart.
  • Norrington: if he took the heart to the East India Trading Company, he would get his life as a British officer back.

The fight for the key began.

The key was ultimately taken by Jack, who then unlocked the chest and stole the heart of Davy Jones. After he placed the heart into his jar of dirt, he was attacked by Koleniko, one of Jones' crewmen. Shortly after, a fight with many of the Jones' crew, which Elizabeth Swann, Pintel and Ragetti were in, continued onto the shallows of Isla Cruces. During the fight, Norrington finds the heart in the jar of dirt and escaped with it. The chest, along with its key, was taken aboard the Flying Dutchman to Davy Jones himself.

Duel at the Fountain of Youth[]

"Hang on a minute! I just—I just needed to understand something. Right. So, you will fight against them, they will fight against you, all on account of him wanting to kill him? Where's the sense? Exactly. I say, let them fight each other as we lay back, watch, have a drink, place some wagers! Eh?!"
