[edit] Description

Disneyland is divided into sections according to theme. The original areas are Main Street USA, Adventureland, Tomorrowland, Fantasyland, and Frontierland. New Orleans Square, Critter Country, and Mickey's Toontown were added later.

Main Street USA, inspired by Disney's hometown, is designed to look like a typical Midwestern town. The design is reminiscent of Victorian-era America.

Fantasyland is possibly the most famous of the sections, containing Sleeping Beauty's Castle. The buildings are designed in a Bavarian fashion and the area contains rides based on fairy tales or old children's stories.

Adventureland is designed to look like an exotic, tropical land. The area takes influences from Africa and Asia.

Tomorrowland is based on ideas of what the future is going to be like. Rocket scientists were consulted when building this section. As perceptions of the future changed, this area has been redesigned.

Frontierland is based on life in America during the early days of the American frontier. The attractions are themed after the Wild West or the old south.

New Orleans Square was added in 1966. The designed is based on 19th century New Orleans. The area is very popular, being home to both the Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean.

Critter Country opened in 1972 as "Bear Country". Originally, Native Americans demonstrated their various customs. In 1988, it was renamed and Splash Mountain was added a year later.

Mickey's Toontown is the newest area of Disneyland. Opened in 1993, the area was inspired by the setting of Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

[edit] Pirates of the Caribbean and Related Attractions

Pirates of the Caribbean is located in New Orleans Square in Disneyland and is one of the most popular attractions. For those who are hungry, the Blue Bayou restaurant has a view of the Lafitte's Landing section of the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. Those wishing for a souvenir can visit the Pieces of Eight shop and have their future told by Fortune Red.

Nearby is the Disney Gallery, which features various Disney art, including art from Pirates of the Caribbean. Also, Tom Sawyer Island has been converted to the Pirate's Lair for the summer of 2007.

At one time, New Orleans Square was also home to the Pirate's Arcade Museum. It has been replaced by the Pieces of Eight shop.

[edit] Pirate Square

Early plans, according to 101 Things You Never Knew About Disneyland, show that Pirates of the Caribbean, the Haunted Mansion, and Tom Sawyer Island were to be linked by a common theme: Jean Laffite. The plan called for for a treasure filled crypt next to the Haunted Mansion. The crypt would contain a treasure trove with undead pirates and exit at a pirate's hideout on Tom Sawyer Island.
