Disney Digital 3-D is a brand used by the Walt Disney Company to describe three-dimensional films made and released by the Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures and shown exclusively using digital projection. It is not a presentation nor a production format or technology. Films advertised as Disney Digital 3-D come from a number of sources, film, digital camera as well as animation software, and can be presented using any digital 3D technology, including RealD, Dolby 3D, XpanD 3D and MasterImage 3D.
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides was the first major "exterior movie" to be shot in 3-D, as previous 3-D movies were mostly done in sound stages, let alone the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie to be filmed in 3-D.
