Under Lord Cutler Beckett, the East India Trading Company built itself a sizable naval presence in the Caribbean, bolstered by Royal Navy marines and ships serving escort duty for the Company's merchant vessels. Beckett commanded his marine forces from the flagship, HMS Endeavour, which transported him to Port Royal at the start of his tenure in the Caribbean Sea.

When Beckett went to war against the Pirate Lords of the Brethren Court, he marshalled more than three hundred vessels,[1] numerically outmatching the Brethren's fleet. By this point, the Flying Dutchman was under Beckett's control, and led the armada into the confrontation off Shipwreck Island.

However, despite its numerical advantage, Beckett didn't send the entire fleet out at once to overwhelm the Pirates. Instead, only the armada's strongest ships, the Dutchman and the HMS Endeavour went out to do battle with the pirates flagship, the Black Pearl. This reckless action lead to the conversion of the Dutchman to the Pirates when Davy Jones was killed, in the Battle of Calypso's maelstrom. Afterwards, both the Pearl and the Dutchman united, and together brought about the destruction of the HMS Endeavour. Now without strong leadership, the remainder of the Armada retreated, the battle over, and the fleet disbanded.
