"You will go. You will return. Or I will kill her."
"...You won't kill your own daughter."
"Quartermaster. Get me six more pistols, remove the shot from all but two, but do not tell me which two.
"
Blackbeard and Jack Sparrow[src]

Blackbeard's gun was a flintlock pistol used by the infamous pirate Blackbeard. Although he was always armed with at least one flintlock pistol, Blackbeard favored this gun during his late pirate career, most notably in the quest for the Fountain of Youth.

History[]

Little is known of this flintlock pistol other than it became one of the more prominent weapons belonging to the infamous pirate Blackbeard during his late pirate career. Blackbeard's formidable appearance was probably his best weapon, but he was always armed with his sword and at least one flintlock pistol.[1]

Blackbeard's gun would most notably be used throughout the quest for the Fountain of Youth, where he attempted to kill several members of his crew aboard the Queen Anne's Revenge. After he single-handedly quelled Jack Sparrow's mutiny, Blackbeard almost used the pistol on Sparrow and the missionary Philip Swift, but was stopped by his daughter Angelica, who "disarmed" him with her faith. During the battle at Whitecap Bay, where some members of his crew tried to retreat to land rather than trying to capture a mermaid, Blackbeard used this pistol to force the pirates back into the water, saying, "There be no refuge on land, on my word!" Later, as the crew reached a chasm in their jungle trek, Blackbeard used his pistol, and six more pistols, to threaten Jack and Angelica's lives in order to force Sparrow to make the jump. Blackbeard continued to wear the pistol on his person until the end of the battle at the Fountain of Youth.[2]

Design and usage[]

Blackbeard's formidable appearance is probably his best weapon, but he is always armed with his sword and at least one flintlock pistol. It had a rounded pommel, which doubled as a club. Powder burns darken the barrel.[1]

Behind the scenes[]

  • Blackbeard's gun first appeared in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.[2]
  • The name "Blackbeard's Gun" would appear in a D23 display for On Stranger Tides.[3]
  • In Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio's screenplay for On Stranger Tides, Blackbeard was described as being wrapped in bandoliers, draped in pistols. After the mutiny on the Queen Anne's Revenge, Blackbeard raises his pistol to kill Philip, but Angelica draws her sword and steps in front of Philip, defending him. Later, as they reach the jungle chasm, Blackbeard orders the Quartermaster to take seven pistols, remove the shot in all but two.[4] The former scene was retained in the film's junior novelization, though Blackbeard gave the command to kill Philip instead of using his pistol.[5] The latter scene, rather than seven pistols, Blackbeard orders for six pistols in the final cut of the film.
  • Some of the concept artworks for On Stranger Tides showed him wearing six pistols.[6]
  • In real-world history, Blackbeard had more than one pistol in his possession. It is possible that this pistol was the one Blackbeard used to cripple his friend and trusted officer Israel Hands for life as a sport.
