- "There's a fresh water spring on this island. We can resupply there, and get back to shooting each other later."
- ―Will Turner
The Black Sand Beach was a small island ringed by glistening black sand. After Lord Cutler Beckett ordered Davy Jones to kill the Kraken, its body lied dead and beached on the black sands of the island. Later, after escaping from Davy Jones' Locker, the Black Pearl sent a landing party to resupply at the closest island on Sao Feng's charts, where there was a fresh water spring. Captains Jack Sparrow and Hector Barbossa led a landing party, where they found the Kraken's desiccating corpse on the shore as well as the corpse of the East India Trading Company agent, Steng, fouling a well's water supply. Placed there by Sao Feng, who knew that Sparrow and Barbossa would come near the Black Sand Beach in need of fresh water, the delay was a decoy that allows the Empress to sack the Black Pearl off the coast.
History[]
Not much is known about the island's early history, only that it was known to be ringed by glistening black sand,[3] consisted of undergrowth and palm trees,[1] as well as its fresh water spring as depicted in Sao Feng's navigational charts. When Lord Cutler Beckett ordered Davy Jones to have the Kraken killed, its body lied dead in its resting place in Black Sand Beach. An East India Trading Company agent named Steng was killed by Captain Sao Feng, the Pirate Lord of Singapore, and the former's corpse was placed at the well to foul its water supply.[2]
After the Black Pearl was liberated from Davy Jones' Locker, Captains Jack Sparrow and Hector Barbossa led a landing party to resupply at the closest island on Sao Feng's navigational charts, which had a fresh water spring according to Will Turner. The crew of the Black Pearl were surprised to find the desiccating corpse of the Kraken beached on the black sands. After a careful search, Sparrow and Barbossa find a well, but found a second corpse of the East India Trading Company agent, Steng, which contaminated the water. Placed there by Sao Feng, who knew that if Barbossa escaped the Locker with Sparrow, they'd come up near the Black Sand Beach in need of fresh water, the delay is a decoy that allows Sao Feng's flagship, the Empress, to sack the Black Pearl.[2]
As Sparrow, Barbossa, and Pintel inspected Steng's corpse, Ragetti alerted them about the Empress launching an ambush on the Black Pearl off the coast of the island. Seeing these turn of events onshore, Tai Huang, who was Sao Feng's lieutenant, took Sparrow, Barbossa, and the rest of the crew hostage. Offshore, Sparrow was sent to meet Cutler Beckett aboard the Endeavour, while Barbossa formed a truce with Feng aboard the Pearl, who was betrayed by Beckett shortly after. Ultimately, Sparrow and the Pearl escaped, then sailed for Shipwreck Cove, while the Endeavour was left damaged during Sparrow's escape.[2]
Behind the scenes[]
- The Black Sand Beach first appeared in the 2007 junior novelization for Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End,[1] and the film itself.[2]
- In Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio's first screenplay draft for At World's End, the location was referred to as "Black Sand Island".[4] The name "Black Sand Beach" appeared in a late production draft, titled Calypso's Fury.[5] "Black Sand Beach" would also be used in the official Pirates of the Caribbean website circa 2010.[3]
- For At World's End, scenes on Black Sand Beach were filmed in Londonderry Beach, a long rugged black-sand beach on the Atlantic coast of Dominica.[6]
- This island never made an appearance in the At World's End video game. In the PlayStation 2 and Windows PC versions of the game, the Kraken's corpse rested within Davy Jones' Locker.
