Bartholomew

A pirate named Bartholomew was known to have set down the Pirate code of the Brethren, in the Pirata Codex, with Sir Henry Morgan, at the dawn of the golden age of piracy.[1]

[edit] Behind the scenes

  • There is some contention as to the identity of Morgan's partner, who is referred to only as "Bartholomew". This individual is commonly held to be Bartholomew Roberts: he and Morgan appear together as spirits in The Buccaneer's Heart! and make several references to the Code. However, Roberts was only six years old when Morgan died, so their partnership is highly unlikely (although it is plausible that Roberts simply finished the Pirata Codex after Morgan's death).
  • A second candidate is Bartolomeo Português, who was known to have established one of the earliest sets of rules that comprised the real-life pirate code around the 1660's. It may also refer to one Bartholomew Sharp, active 1679-82.
