- "We go west."
"Why the devil would we head west?"
"You have cargo bound for Antigua, do you not?"
"Bugger that!" - ―Amenirdis and Jack Sparrow
Antigua was an island in the West Indies, Leeward Islands in the Caribbean region.
History[]
- "How many more days to reach Antigua?"
"A few days, perhaps a week, at most. Depending on the wind, as you've doubtless learned by now." - ―Amenirdis and Jack Sparrow
Antigua was discovered and named by Christopher Columbus in 1493. In 1632, a group of English colonists left St. Kitts to settle in Antigua. Under Edward Warner, their leader, they grew cash crops of tobacco, ginger, indigo and sugar. Soon after, slaves from Africa were brought on island to work on sugar plantations.
During Jack Sparrow's search for the Sword of Cortés, the crew of the Barnacle sailed for Antigua to buy some supplies.[1][2] The crew picked up some empty glass jars in Antigua, which Jack insisted might come in handy someday, but actually served no other purpose than occupying space below deck.[3] A few years later, when Jack was a merchant captain in the East India Trading Company, his ship, the Wicked Wench, made port in Antigua.[4]
