Adriatic

The Adriatic Sea.

"His fleet terrorizes ships throughout the Mediterranean and the Adriatic, Villanueva’s territory. I heard he even stole from some of Villanueva’s own ships."
―Sailor[src]

The Adriatic Sea was a body of water that separated the Italian peninsula from the Balkans.

History[]

In ancient times, the pirates of Illyria were famous for attacking ships in the area.

During the late 16th and early 17th century, the town of Senj on east Adriatic coast served as the home port of uskoks, the Croatian privateers who fought for the Austrian Empire. They pillaged Venetian and Ottoman ships, resulting in a war between the Austrian Empire and Venice (1615-1617).

The notorious pirate Jack Sparrow sailed across the Adriatic at some point before he was forced to abandon the pirate's life and join the East India Trading Company.[1] The Spanish pirate Eduardo Villanueva was the Pirate Lord of the Adriatic Sea for many years, from the time when the Brethren Court faced the threat of the rogue pirates,[2] during the quest for the Shadow Gold,[3] until the end of Lord Cutler Beckett's War Against Piracy.[4][5]
